San Juan Skyway

Colorado is well known for an abundance of scenic drives, but the San Juan Skyway Scenic Drive is certainly one of the best.  This morning we got in the truck and headed north towards the town of Delores and followed the Delores River into the San Juan National forest. Many of the Aspen trees had already lost their leaves, but it was still a very pretty drive.  As we progressed, we started entering into the San Juan Mountains.  We went past Telluride, a famous ski resort. When we hit the town of Ridgway, we started driving south towards the town of Ouray.  As we left Ouray, the traffic on the road was stalled.  We learned that a 39 y/o man had an accident and plunged 370 ft over the hillside.  He had serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital.  We drove through Silverton, a former silver mining camp and finally came to the town of Durango.  We then drove west back to the campground in Cortez. We spent about 7 hours on the trip.  Below are some of the many pictures we took:

The highest peak which is to the right, is Mount Wilson.  It peaks at 14,246 ft.
